‘Fun’ is the best way to change your ways

Let me ask you a question, do you like having fun?

Of course you do! Who doesn’t?

Fun is underrated. Fun is good.

People often think that ‘having fun’ means ‘wasting your time’. But that’s not true.

Actually, is quite the opposite.

Fun is a great way to grow. To learn. To change. To overcome. To improve. To become better. But we overlook it. We don’t use it. We may even feel bad if we have ‘too much fun’ while learning. We tend to think that ‘personal growth’ is a serious business, and it is, but not in that kind of way.

The truth is, one of the keys of successful personal growth is having what we call ‘creative fun’. Fun is one of the most effective ways to change your ways.

Take a look at this behavioral experiment from a couple of years ago:

A Volkswagen initiative called The Fun Theory set out to prove that people’s behavior can be changed for the better by making mundane activities fun. In the experiment, they set up musical piano steps on the staircase of a Stockholm, Sweden subway station to see if more people would be willing to choose the healthier option and take the stairs instead of the escalator.

That day, 66% more people took the stairs than usual, proving that fun is one of the best ways to get people to change their ways.

Isn’t that amazing!? 66% more people took the stairs simply because they looked like a piano! It’s the same stairs. You have to put the same effort to go up. But now it’s easier to take the steps. Why? Because it’s fun.

Are you struggling with achieving your personal goals? You want to change something right now in your life? Change a bad habit? Become healthier or happier, or whatever? Try to add a tiny bit of "fun" to your goal setting process. Spice up your goals a little bit so it will be easier for you to accomplish them. Take the stairs instead of the elevator and dance your way up. Instead of ‘going for a boring half-hour run’ try ‘going for a half-hour run with your significant other’, make it a date instead of a workout. Whatever works for you. You get the idea?

Fun is not the end in itself, but certainly is one of the best ways to get there.
